Haier Washer Dryer Combo Error Codes: E4, E5 and ClrFltr

Quick Answer

Haier combo washer dryers code both washing and drying faults. E5 and ClrFltr are drain filter jobs, E4 is a fill or siphon problem, door is the lid.

A Haier washer dryer combo carries two sets of faults in one machine, and the codes reflect that. Some point at washing, such as E4 for a fill problem and E5 for a slow drain. Others point at drying, such as Fd for a dry heating element error and FE for a dry motor error. The good news is that the four most common codes are homeowner jobs: E5, ClrFltr, door and E4.

ClrFltr is a word, not a code

If your display is showing something that looks like "ClrFltr", that is Haier telling you to clear the filter. It is the drainage error raised when water has not fully drained within 6 minutes. E5 is the same fault caught sooner, at 1 minute, on the Refresh programme.

Both have the same fix, and it is one of the few genuinely satisfying appliance jobs:

  1. Switch the machine off and unplug it.
  2. Find the small hatch at the bottom front. Put a towel and a shallow tray underneath, because water will come out, often more than you expect.
  3. Unscrew the filter slowly and let it drain.
  4. Clear out the lint, coins, buttons and hair that have collected, rinse the filter, and screw it back in firmly.
  5. Check the drain hose behind the machine for kinks or anything crushing it.

Combo machines tend to collect more filter debris than a plain washer, because everything that would normally end up in a dryer lint trap has nowhere else to go.

E4: fill timeout or a siphoning drain hose

Haier gives E4 two possible causes on this machine: the water level was not reached within 8 minutes, or the drain hose is siphoning.

Siphoning is the one people miss. If the drain hose sits too far down the standpipe, draining water pulls more water with it, so the machine fills and empties at the same time and never reaches its level. The hose needs a high loop and an air gap at the standpipe rather than being pushed deep into the pipe.

Otherwise it is the supply: tap fully open, hoses unkinked, and pressure meeting the minimum in the install guide.

The drying side: Fd, FE, F9, FY and E12

These are the codes unique to a combo, because a plain washer does not have them. Fd is the dry heating element, FE the dry motor, F9 the dry temperature sensor, and FY a heating error. E12 is interesting: the drying water level is too high, which means the machine is trying to dry while there is still too much water in the system.

Haier sends all of these to a service technician. What you can do is note the exact code. "It dries but throws F9" and "it will not heat at all and shows Fd" point at different parts, and saying so shortens the visit.

One realistic expectation about combos generally: they dry more slowly than a separate vented dryer, because they condense moisture rather than exhausting it. A cycle that feels slow is not automatically a fault. If clothes come out genuinely damp after a full cycle, our guide on a dryer that takes two cycles to dry is a good next read.

door and E2: two different door problems

Haier lists a literal door code as a lock error, with the fix being to make sure the door is shut properly and nothing is caught in it. E2 is similar but broader: the door is not properly closed, or there is a door lock failure or bad connection. For E2 Haier says to check the door first and book a service only if that does not work.

In both cases the usual culprit is a sleeve or towel corner caught in the seal, holding the door a couple of millimetres open.

Frequently asked questions

What does ClrFltr mean on a Haier washer dryer?

It is a drainage error raised when water has not fully drained within 6 minutes, and it is literally telling you to clear the filter. Clean the water pump filter and check the drain hose.

What is the difference between E5 and ClrFltr?

Both are drainage errors with the same fix. Haier raises E5 when water is not fully drained within 1 minute on the Refresh programme, and ClrFltr when it is not drained within 6 minutes.

What does E4 mean on a Haier washer dryer combo?

Either the water level was not reached within 8 minutes, or the drain hose is siphoning. Check the tap, the pressure, and how the drain hose is installed.

Which codes mean the drying side has failed?

Fd is the dry heating element, FE the dry motor, F9 the dry temperature sensor, FY a heating error, and E12 means the drying water level is too high. Haier sends all of them to a technician.

Why does my combo take so long to dry?

Combos condense moisture instead of venting it, so they are slower than a separate dryer by design. A code such as Fd or F9 is what separates a slow cycle from a fault.
