Haier Top Loader Error Codes: E1, E2, E3, E4 and OB

Quick Answer

Haier top load washers use their own code set. E1 is not draining, E3 is out of balance, E4 is not filling, and four of them you can clear without a technician.

Haier top load washers use a different code set from Haier front loaders, so looking your code up on the wrong list gives you the wrong answer. On a top loader, Haier defines E1 as not draining, E2 as the lid not closed, E3 as out of balance, and E4 as not filling. Four codes on the list have homeowner fixes, and they happen to be the four you are most likely to see.

Why the same code means different things on different Haier washers

This is the part that causes most of the confusion online. Haier publishes separate fault code tables for top loaders, front loaders and washer dryer combos, and the letters overlap while the meanings do not.

A clear example is E4. On a top loader, Haier simply calls it "not filling". On a Haier washer dryer combo, E4 is defined as the water level not being reached within 8 minutes, or the drain hose siphoning. Those are related problems but different checks. E2 is another: on a top loader it means the lid is not closed, which is something you fix in two seconds, while on other Haier machines E2 points at a door lock fault.

So before you look up a code, know which machine you have. If yours is a front loading Haier, our Haier washer error codes guide covers that code set instead.

E4: not filling, and the check almost nobody makes

Haier's E4 advice contains a detail worth pausing on. It says to check the inlet hoses are not kinked, not reversed, and that the tap is on.

Reversed hoses means the hot and cold supply lines have been swapped. It is an easy mistake during an install or after moving a machine, and it causes odd behaviour rather than an obvious failure: the washer calls for cold, gets hot, and the fill logic does not behave as expected. Check the hose connections against the markings on the back of the machine before you assume a valve has failed.

The rest of E4 is the usual list. Both taps fully open rather than part way, no kinks behind the machine, and the small mesh inlet screens clear of grit.

E3 and OB: two codes for the same underlying problem

Haier lists both E3 and OB as out of balance, with OB spelled out as OOB. The practical difference is what Haier tells you to do. For E3 the advice is to check the machine is level and not overloaded. For OB, Haier adds a specific recovery step: balance the load, then press Start/Pause to continue the cycle.

Top loaders are more prone to balance faults than front loaders because the drum spins on a vertical axis, so a heavy item that migrates to one side has more leverage. A few practical habits:

  • Spread items around the drum rather than dropping them in as one lump.
  • Wash a single heavy item, such as a bath mat or a comforter, with a couple of towels for balance.
  • Check the machine does not rock. A floor that is slightly out of true needs the feet adjusting.

If yours moves across the floor during a spin, our guide on a washing machine that shakes and walks covers levelling and shipping bolts in more detail.

E1: not draining

Haier's instruction for E1 is to check the drain hose for kinks first, and only then to suspect a blocked or defective pump. That order is deliberate, because the hose is free to check and the pump is not.

Worth adding to Haier's list: the standpipe your hose empties into can be partly blocked, which looks exactly like a washer fault. If a sink nearby drains slowly at the same time, the problem is household plumbing rather than the machine.

E2: the lid

Haier's entire fix for E2 is "ensure lid is closed", which sounds too simple until you realise how often it is the answer. A top loader will not spin with the lid up, for obvious safety reasons. Check for a towel draped over the edge holding the lid a few millimetres open, and push the lid until it clicks. If the lid is genuinely shut and E2 persists, the lid switch is the suspect, and Haier lists E8 and E2-1 as lock faults needing service.

Frequently asked questions

What does E4 mean on a Haier top loader?

Haier defines it as not filling, and says to check the inlet hoses are not kinked, not reversed, and that the tap is on.

What is the difference between E3 and OB?

Both are out of balance. For E3 Haier says to check the machine is level and not overloaded. For OB it adds the step of balancing the load and pressing Start/Pause to continue the cycle.

Why does my Haier top loader show E1?

E1 is not draining. Check the drain hose for kinks first. If there are none, Haier says the pump may be blocked or defective, which needs a technician.

Do Haier top loaders and front loaders use the same codes?

No. Haier publishes separate tables, and the same characters can mean different things. Confirm which type of machine you have before looking a code up.

Can I keep using the washer with an OB code?

OB stops the spin rather than damaging anything. Redistribute the load, make sure the machine is level, and press Start/Pause to carry on.
