Haier Front Loader Error Codes: Err Codes vs E Codes

Quick Answer

Older Haier front loaders show Err1 to Err8, newer ones show E and F codes. They do not match: Err5 and E5 mean different things. Both official lists.

Haier front load washers use two completely different code systems depending on how old the machine is, and mixing them up sends you after the wrong fault. Early models display Err1 through Err8. Current models display E and F codes plus some word codes such as CLR FLTR and Unb.

The trap is that the numbers do not carry across. On an early machine, Err5 means the water level was not met in 8 minutes, which is a fill problem. On a current machine, E5 is a drainage error, which is the opposite end of the cycle. Check which list applies to your washer before you act on anything.

Which list do I need?

Look at the display. If the code starts with the letters Err, use the early models table. If it is a single letter followed by a number, such as E4 or F7, or a word such as CLR FLTR, use the current models table. That is the quickest way to tell without hunting for a model number.

Haier also lists two installation causes: the drain hose height is below 80cm, or the drain hose is sitting in water.Check the tap is turned on and water pressure is normal. Install the drain hose at a height between 80 and 100cm, and make sure the end is not sitting in water. If the problem continues, book a service.

The drain hose height rule that explains most fill faults

Buried in Haier's early models table is a number worth knowing, because it quietly causes both fill and drain complaints: the drain hose should be installed at a height between 80 and 100cm, which is roughly 31 to 39 inches.

Two things go wrong when it is outside that range:

  • Too low. Haier lists a drain hose below 80cm as a cause of Err5, the fill fault. If the hose sits too low, water drains out under gravity as fast as the machine takes it in, so the drum never reaches its level and the fill times out.
  • The end sitting in water. Haier lists this separately. If the hose end is submerged in a standpipe or laundry tub, it siphons, with the same result.

That is also what the current models mean by E4 and "the drain hose is self-siphoning". Same physical problem, different code. It costs nothing to check, and it is a far more common cause than a failed valve.

Eb: laundry caught in the door

This is a nice piece of design and worth knowing about. Rather than just reporting a lock fault, a current Haier front loader can tell you specifically that clothing is trapped in the door. Open it, free the item, and press Start to carry on with the program. No parts, no service call.

If you see E2 instead, that is the broader lock error, and the first check is the same: something obstructing the door, usually a sleeve or a towel corner holding it a couple of millimetres open.

Unb and the transit bolt trap

Haier's current models advice for Unb includes a check that catches people out on brand new machines: make sure the transit bolts have been removed.

Transit bolts hold the drum rigid during shipping. If they are not taken out before the first wash, the machine vibrates hard, cannot balance, and can damage itself. Every new front loader has them, and they are easy to forget. The rest of the Unb advice is the usual: balance the load, make sure the machine is stable on the floor, and reduce the load size. CLR FLTR means what it says

If the display reads something like CLR FLTR, Haier is telling you to clear the filter. It is the drainage error raised when water has not fully drained within 6 minutes. On early machines the same fault appears as Err2, with the same fix: clean the pump filter and check the drain hose for a blockage.

Put a towel and a shallow tray down before you open the filter hatch at the bottom front, because water will come out.

Frequently asked questions

What does Err5 mean on a Haier washing machine?

On early Haier front loaders, Err5 means the water level was not met in 8 minutes. Haier lists three causes: the tap or water pressure, a drain hose installed below 80cm, or a drain hose with its end sitting in water.

Is Err5 the same as E5?

No, and this is the main trap. Err5 on an early machine is a fill fault. E5 on a current machine is a drainage error. Check whether your display shows Err codes or E codes first.

What height should the drain hose be?

Haier specifies between 80 and 100cm, about 31 to 39 inches, and says the end must not be sitting in water.

What does Eb mean?

On current models, Eb means laundry is caught in the door. Open the door, clear the obstruction, and press Start.

My new Haier washer shows Unb on every spin. Why?

Check the transit bolts have been removed. Haier lists that specifically under Unb, and a machine still bolted for shipping cannot balance.
