LG Range Error Codes: LG Gives F3 Three Different Meanings

Quick Answer

Every LG range code from F1 to F69, the two that are not faults at all, and why LG's own pages disagree about what F3 and the reset time actually are.

LG publishes more than forty range codes, and it does not tell the same story about all of them. F3 is the clearest case: across LG's own support pages it is described three different ways, and the reset it recommends is six to ten times longer on one LG site than another.

None of that means the codes are useless. It means you should know which page a given answer came from. Below is LG's full US list, the two displays that are not faults at all, and the places LG contradicts itself.

Two things on the display that are not errors

Worth clearing up first, because both look alarming.

  • HS means "the cooktop temperature is greater than 150F." LG states directly: "This is not an error code and is only an indication of a cooktop too hot to touch." It is a residual heat indicator. LG only treats it as a problem if the surface is at room temperature and the indicator will not turn off.
  • Sb means "the unit is in Sabbath Mode," and again LG says "This is not an error code." To exit: press Bake, set the bake temperature with the plus and minus keys, press Start, then press and hold Clock for 3 seconds.

Sabbath mode is easy to trigger by accident and baffling if you do not know the feature exists, because the oven stops responding the way you expect.

The full LG range code list

LG attaches one of two procedures to each code. We have marked which.

Procedure A: press the CLEAR/OFF key and try the original function again, then if the code reappears, turn the circuit breaker off and wait 30 seconds before turning it back on.
Procedure B: the breaker step only, 30 seconds off.

CodeWhat LG says it indicatesSteps

LG also lists numbered cooktop codes shown as images rather than text. Codes 1, 2 and 3 all indicate a thermistor error. Code 4 indicates "metal objects or water has come into contact for a prolonged time," and its first step is to clean the cooktop surface and remove objects sitting on the touch pads. Code 5 indicates an error was detected with the display. For codes 1 through 5 LG asks you to press the Power ON/OFF button first rather than CLEAR/OFF.

Code 6 is the exception worth noting: it indicates low voltage, and LG's only instruction is that it "will require a qualified electrician to examine the unit for a proper diagnosis." That is the one code on the list LG sends to an electrician rather than an appliance technician.

F3: three answers from the same manufacturer

If you have searched this code and found conflicting explanations, the conflict is LG's own.

  • LG's US range code list says F3 "indicates a Touch Pad Sensor Key Error."
  • LG's Canadian F-3 page says something broader: "F3 indicates a short-circuit somewhere in the wire harness leading to a button. It does not necessarily imply the button itself is at fault." It adds that either the key pad or the wiring harness is the cause and a technician needs to determine which.
  • That same Canadian page also states, in its bullet list, that F-3 "indicates an open oven sensor," which is a different component again.
  • And LG's Canadian F-9 page summarises F-3 a fourth way, as "caused by key short error."

The practical takeaway: do not let anyone tell you F3 definitely means the touchpad needs replacing. LG's own broader description is that the fault may be in the harness rather than the pad, which is a different part and a different price.

F9, and the figure that only appears on one LG page

On LG's US list, F9 says only that the upper oven "Is Not Heating Properly." No numbers.

LG Canada's electric range page is far more specific: "An F-9 error code on an LG electric range means that the oven failed to heat up to 150F after five minutes of preheating."

That is a useful definition, because it tells you the control is making a timed measurement rather than detecting a dead part. LG Canada lists the likely causes as a short circuited element, a defective relay printed circuit board, a defective relay connector, or an electrical fault that magnetized the circuitry, and says plainly that "the only course of action is a repair service."

We are attributing this to the Canadian page deliberately. The US page does not publish those figures, so treat them as LG's explanation for that market rather than a universal spec.

The reset time depends which LG page you read

This one genuinely matters, because a reset that is too short looks like a reset that did not work.

LG sourceHow long to cut power
US range code listBreaker off, 30 seconds
Canada, electric rangeUnplug or breaker off, 3 to 5 minutes
Canada, gas range F-9"Remove the power from the range for five minutes and then reconnect the power."

If 30 seconds did not clear your code, that is not proof the range needs a technician. Try the longer version before you conclude anything. Both come from LG.

On stopping the noise, LG's wording differs too: the US list says press CLEAR/OFF, while the Canadian pages say to press Clear/Off or "Turn the Oven mode knob to the Off position to clear the display and stop beeping."

Gas ranges: check the valve, and check you pressed Start

For a gas oven that will not heat, LG gives two checks that cost nothing.

The first is obvious once said: "The gas valve must be open for the oven to heat." LG distinguishes two valves, which is the part people miss. "The gas shut off valve is the connection on the home side, whereas the pressure regulator is the connection on the unit side." So if the home's gas valve is on, LG's next instruction is to check the pressure regulator on the unit, whose location varies by model.

The second is the one that catches people out completely. LG: "Oven control settings must be confirmed by pressing the START button after the temperature is changed. Any temperature change made will be canceled if it is not confirmed by pressing the START button within 25 seconds."

A gas oven that silently refuses to heat, with no code at all, is very often this. You set the temperature, got distracted, and the setting expired.

LG also notes the igniter glows "for about 30 to 60 seconds" before the gas lights, so a pause before heat is normal, and that "If the igniter doesn't work, an error code will display."

Frequently asked questions

What does F9 mean on an LG oven?

LG's US list says the upper oven is not heating properly. LG Canada's electric range page is more specific, saying the oven failed to heat up to 150F after five minutes of preheating, and lists a short circuited element or a defective relay board or connector as causes.

What does F3 mean on an LG range?

It depends which LG page you read. The US list says a touch pad sensor key error. LG Canada says a short circuit somewhere in the wire harness leading to a button, and explicitly notes this does not necessarily mean the button itself is at fault. Its first step either way is a breaker reset.

How do I reset an LG range?

Press CLEAR/OFF and try the function again, then switch the circuit breaker off. LG's US page says 30 seconds; its Canadian pages say 3 to 5 minutes, and five minutes for a gas F-9. If the short reset fails, use the longer one.

Is HS an error on an LG cooktop?

No. LG says HS means the cooktop is above 150F and that "This is not an error code and is only an indication of a cooktop too hot to touch." It only matters if the surface is cool and the indicator stays on.

My LG oven will not heat and shows no code. Why?

On a gas range, check that both the home gas shut off valve and the pressure regulator on the unit are open. Then check you pressed Start: LG says a temperature change is canceled if it is not confirmed with the START button within 25 seconds.

What is Sb on an LG oven?

Sabbath Mode, which LG says is not an error code. Exit it by pressing Bake, setting a temperature with the plus and minus keys, pressing Start, then holding Clock for 3 seconds.

Which LG range code means an electrical problem in my home?

Code 6, which indicates low voltage. LG's only published instruction for it is that a qualified electrician should examine the unit for a proper diagnosis.
