Whirlpool Refrigerator Codes and Lights: Most of Them Are Not Faults

Quick Answer

PO, a flashing F, a door alarm, a filter light. Whirlpool documents what each one means, and most are not failures. What the display is actually telling you.

Most of what shows up on a Whirlpool refrigerator display is not a fault. PO is a record of a power cut. The door alarm is telling you a door is open. The filter lights are service reminders. Even COOLING OFF is a setting somebody chose, not a breakdown.

There is one genuine alert on the list, the temperature alarm, and it comes with exact thresholds. And there is one group of real codes, the flashing F family, where Whirlpool publishes the same answer for all fourteen of them.

PO: a record, not a failure

This is the most searched Whirlpool refrigerator code and the most misread. It is the power outage indicator.

Whirlpool's description: the feature "lets you know if the power supply to the refrigerator has been off and the freezer temperature has risen to 18F (-8C) or higher. The control panel temperature display will read PO, and an alert tone will sound three times."

So PO is not telling you the refrigerator is broken. It is telling you that while you were out, the power went off for long enough that your freezer got to 18F or warmer, which is a food safety message. Whirlpool does not call it a fault anywhere on the page and gives no repair steps for it.

To clear it, Confirm blinks until you acknowledge it by pressing Measured Fill under Confirm. Once confirmed, PO disappears and the display returns to the home screen. On these models the Measured Fill button doubles as the Confirm key, which is why the instruction looks odd at first.

The useful part is what PO should prompt you to do, which is check the freezer contents rather than the refrigerator. Whirlpool has told you the freezer reached at least 18F. Nothing on the display tells you how long it stayed there.

The temperature alarm is the one real warning

This one has numbers, and they are worth writing down.

Whirlpool: the over temperature feature "alerts you when the refrigerator temperature rises above 48F (9C) or the freezer temperature rises above 15F (-9C) for more than 1 and a half hours. The audio alarm will shut off automatically when the temperature returns to normal, but the indicator light will continue to flash until the Alarm is pressed."

Two things follow from that. First, the alarm is deliberately slow, because it waits more than ninety minutes before sounding, so it will not fire every time somebody stands with the door open. Second, the light outlasting the sound is intentional. A silent refrigerator with a flashing alarm light means the temperature already recovered but an event happened while you were away. That is the signal not to ignore.

The indicators people mistake for errors

DisplayWhat Whirlpool says it meansWhat to do
POPower outage, and the freezer reached 18F (-8C) or higher. Three alert tones.Press Measured Fill under Confirm. Check your frozen food.
Door alarm or Door Ajar iconSounds when a door or the freezer drawer is left open for 2 to 5 minutes depending on model, and repeats every 2 minutes.Close all doors. Check bins, shelves or packages are not blocking the door, and that the doors reach the door switch. Confirm the refrigerator is level.
COOLING OFFCooling is turned off, so neither compartment will cool.On many models, press and hold Lock and Measured Fill together for 3 seconds to turn cooling back on. Whirlpool notes some refrigerators need to be turned back on manually after an outage or a surge.
Temperature alarmFridge above 48F or freezer above 15F for more than 1 and a half hours.Press Alarm to clear the light. If the temperature does not recover, it is a cooling problem.
Air filter iconA filter life reminder, not a fault. Blue is good, yellow means order one, red with Replace Filter means change it, and a flashing Replace Filter means expired.Press and hold the Air Filter button for 3 seconds. The icon returns to blue.
Water filter light or H2OA water filter reminder. Whirlpool recommends replacing the filter every 6 months, when the light comes on, or as needed. The reset varies by model. See the section below.
Flashing F, or any F# E#A real control error. Whirlpool publishes no individual meaning. See below. One minute power cycle, confirm cooling is on, watch one minute, then service if it returns.

The door alarm has one detail that saves a lot of irritation: to silence it while deliberately holding the doors open, for instance when cleaning inside, touch any button on the control panel. Whirlpool also confirms the alarm volume cannot be adjusted.

Being straight about the F codes

Whirlpool lists fourteen refrigerator codes in the flashing F family: F3 E1, F3 E2, F3 E4, F3 E8, F3 E9, F3 EC, F4 E1, F6 E1, F8 E1, F8 E2, F8 E3, F8 E8, F8 EC, and a plain flashing F.

We read every one of those pages. They all carry the same text, and none of them says what its own code means. Each page reads: "If the letter F is flashing on the display of the refrigerator, try resetting the refrigerator as instructed below. If the problem persists, schedule service."

The steps are identical on all fourteen:

  1. Turn off the circuit breakers, or unplug the refrigerator, for one minute.
  2. Restore power.
  3. Make sure the cooling function is turned on.
  4. Watch for one minute to confirm the code does not come back.

We are saying this plainly because it is the opposite of what most code lists imply. If you are hunting for what F8 E2 means on a Whirlpool refrigerator, Whirlpool itself does not publish a meaning for it. Any site giving you a confident per code diagnosis is not getting it from Whirlpool's support pages. The honest answer is that these are internal control faults, the reset is your one self service step, and the code number is information for the technician rather than for you.

Step three is the one worth not skipping. A refrigerator that was power cycled and left with cooling switched off looks exactly like a refrigerator that failed.

Resetting the filter lights, which is model dependent

Whirlpool is explicit that the water filter status "needs to be reset whenever the water filter is replaced; it does not reset automatically," and that the method varies by model. The versions it documents:

  • Hold Light and Ice Type together for 3 seconds.
  • Hold Max Cool and Max Ice together for 3 seconds. The display counts down 3 seconds, then flashes the icon and plays a tone.
  • Press and hold a dedicated Filter Reset button.
  • Press and hold the Water Filter button for 3 seconds, until the icon returns to blue and Replace Filter disappears.

The air filter is simpler: hold the Air Filter button for 3 seconds from any status. For refrigerators with no indicator at all, Whirlpool suggests changing the water filter at least every 6 to 9 months.

Undercounter refrigerators are a separate list

If yours is an undercounter unit rather than a full size refrigerator, it uses its own short code set: E1, E2, and HI or LO. These are plain codes with no F prefix.

As with the full size F codes, Whirlpool states no meaning for any of them. All three pages give the same instruction: power down at the breaker or unplug for one minute, restore power and monitor for one minute, then verify operation. Notably, none of the three mentions scheduling service.

Frequently asked questions

What does PO mean on a Whirlpool refrigerator?

Power outage. It means the power was off and the freezer rose to 18F (-8C) or higher, and it sounds three alert tones. Press Measured Fill under Confirm to clear it. It is an indicator rather than a fault, so the thing to check is your frozen food, not the refrigerator.

How do I reset a Whirlpool refrigerator?

Turn off the breakers or unplug it for one minute, restore power, confirm the cooling function is on, then watch for one minute to see whether the code returns. That is Whirlpool's procedure for every F code it publishes.

What does F8 E2 mean on a Whirlpool refrigerator?

Whirlpool does not publish a specific meaning. Its F8 E2 page, like all fourteen of its refrigerator F code pages, carries the same text telling you to reset the refrigerator and schedule service if the code returns. It is a control fault whose detail is for the technician.

Why is my refrigerator beeping with the door closed?

The door ajar alarm sounds when a door or the freezer drawer stays open 2 to 5 minutes and repeats every 2 minutes, so a door that looks shut but is not reaching its switch will keep it going. Check for a bin, shelf or package holding the door off its seal, and confirm the refrigerator is level. To mute it deliberately while cleaning, touch any button.

My display says COOLING OFF. Is the refrigerator broken?

No, cooling has been switched off. On many models, holding Lock and Measured Fill together for 3 seconds turns it back on. Some models need to be switched back on by hand after a power outage or surge, which is why this sometimes appears without anyone touching the panel.

How often should I change the water filter?

Whirlpool recommends every 6 months, when the indicator light comes on, or as needed, and at least every 6 to 9 months on refrigerators without an indicator. The status does not reset itself when you fit a new filter.
