Midea Refrigerator Error Codes and the Hidden Display Mode

Midea refrigerator error codes run from E0 to EF, and almost all of them are sensor faults. E1 and E2 are the fridge and freezer temperature sensors, E4 and E5 are the defrost sensors, E6 is a communication failure between the display and the main board, E9 is a high temperature alarm, and EF means the water tank is not seated properly.

There is also something Midea documents that almost nobody else mentions, and it explains why people say the code "disappeared". According to Midea's service manual, error codes only display within the first 30 minutes of each power-on. After that, you have to enter a hidden error code display mode to see them.

Why your error code vanished

This is the most useful thing in Midea's manual, and it catches people out constantly. Midea states that error codes will display within the first 30 minutes of each power-on, and after that you have to enter the error code display mode to view them.

So the familiar story of "I unplugged it, the code went away, and now it is back" is often not the fault coming and going at all. The fridge simply stopped showing the code after half an hour, then showed it again the next time it was powered up. The fault was there the whole time.

How to see a code your fridge is hiding

Midea's service manual gives the button sequence. On models with SUPER COOL and SUPER FRZ buttons:

1. Press and hold SUPER COOL and SUPER FRZ together for 7 seconds, until the display shows 0.
2. Press the FREEZER button to select mode A6.
3. It takes effect once the panel locks. Any stored error code is now displayed.
4. To exit, hold SUPER COOL and SUPER FRZ for 7 seconds again and use FREEZER to select 0.

Two notes. Button names and layouts vary between Midea models, so this will not match every panel. And this is a diagnostic mode, not a repair: it shows you what the fridge already knows.

EF is the one you can actually fix

EF means the water tank is not installed correctly, and Midea's own first step is simply to pull the water tank out and install it again. If that does not clear it, the manual moves on to the connection terminals behind the water tank seat and then a damaged switch in the seat itself.

Before booking anything for an EF, take the tank out, look for anything caught behind it, and push it back in until it seats. It is a two minute check.

E9 and what to do before the technician arrives

E9 is a high temperature alarm, which means the compartment is warmer than it should be. That could be a failing part, but it can also be caused by things you control, so check these first:

• Vents inside the fridge blocked by packed food, which starves airflow.
• A door not sealing, often because a container is holding it open a few millimetres.
• Not enough clearance around the back and sides for heat to escape.
• A recent big shop, or hot food put straight in.

While you sort it out, protect the food. FoodSafety.gov says a closed refrigerator holds food safely for about 4 hours, a full freezer for about 48 hours, and a half full freezer for about 24 hours. Keep the fridge at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below and the freezer at 0 degrees or below, and use a separate thermometer rather than trusting a panel fed by the sensor that may be at fault.

Why nearly everything on the list is a technician job

Look at the pattern: temperature sensors, defrost sensors, an ambient sensor, a humidity sensor, board communication. Midea's repair steps for these are all the same shape, and they tell you why. Check the connection terminals, then measure the sensor's resistance with a multimeter, then replace the sensor, then replace the main board if it still faults.

That sequence needs a meter and the resistance values for your model. Guessing at which sensor to replace is how people spend money twice. If the fridge is still cooling, you have time to book properly rather than panic buying a part.
